Greece reports 5.7 billion euro primary budget surplus for Jan-July 2026
Greece's state budget has demonstrated strong performance during the first seven months of 2026. Preliminary data indicates a primary surplus of 5.725 billion euros, significantly exceeding the initial target of 4.417 billion euros.
Tax revenues for this period reached 42.916 billion euros, outperforming projections. Net state budget revenues were recorded at 45.207 billion euros. The surge in July's collections was largely driven by income tax payments, as many taxpayers opted to settle their liabilities in full to benefit from discounts of 2% to 4%.
This fiscal overperformance provides increased budgetary room for potential social support measures. However, officials note that the surplus in fiscal terms differs from the result in cash terms, and significant tax obligations remain for the second half of the year.
