Greece economic trends show rising inflation and labor productivity gaps
Greece is experiencing diverse economic shifts. Tourism remains a strong driver, with international arrivals increasing by 3.6% in the first seven months of 2026, led by Crete which saw 3.2 million arrivals.
However, inflationary pressures are rising. Greek inflation hit 3.7% in August, driven by energy and service costs, while Eurozone inflation rose to 3.3%. This trend fuels expectations of interest rate hikes by the European Central Bank.
Labor market data reveals a complex picture: while unemployment reached a 19-year low of 7.9% in July 2026, the total number of employees has decreased significantly compared to 2018. Furthermore, a major productivity gap persists; Greek workers log more hours than their European counterparts but generate significantly lower economic value per hour, with average hourly output around €24 compared to much higher levels in Germany and France.
On the fiscal front, Greece's debt-to-GDP ratio is projected to continue its decline, potentially falling below Italy's levels by 2026, aided in part by inflation. Additionally, the government is introducing new digital tools, including a credit scoring system, to monitor private debt and creditworthiness.
