Greece reports marginal increase in Q1 2026 births amid long-term decline

Data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority shows a marginal 0.4% increase in births in Greece during the first quarter of 2026, with 15,946 live births recorded compared to 15,889 during the same period in 2025.

Despite this slight uptick, the long-term trend indicates a significant demographic decline. Comparing the first quarter of 2026 to the first quarter of 2021, births fell from 20,697 to 15,946, representing a decrease of approximately 22% over five years. Greece remains among the European countries with the lowest fertility rates, facing structural aging and gradual population contraction.
