Greece reshuffles cabinet and passes fast‑track deportation law under Mitsotakis

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced a major cabinet reshuffle, installing 15 new ministers, 25 new general secretaries and other senior posts, all drawn from New Democracy parliamentarians rather than technocrats. The appointments include former regional governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas as European Commissioner, Kostas Tasoulas as president of the Republic, Nikitas Kaklamanis as speaker of parliament and Konstantinos Kyranakis as secretary of New Democracy’s political committee.

In parallel, Greece’s parliament approved legislation to accelerate deportations of rejected asylum seekers. The law permits transfers to designated “return hubs” outside the EU once agreements with third‑country partners are finalized. It follows new EU rules allowing member states to send migrants to external centers and is coordinated with the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany and Austria, with operational hubs expected by 2027. The measures mark a shift toward stricter migration control.
