Greece retreated twice in maritime disputes near Kassos, MP Syrigos confirms
New Democracy MP and International Law professor Angelos Syrigos has confirmed that Greece retreated on two separate occasions regarding maritime research near Kassos in 2024. Speaking to ERTNEWS, Syrigos stated, “In both episodes we retreated. We did not proceed with the continuation of the seafloor research.”
These incidents occurred in July and November 2024, when Turkish warships were deployed to interrupt Greek seafloor research activities. Syrigos noted that the Greek government chose to step back in the hope that the matter could be resolved through dialogue.
These admissions have sparked debate regarding the effectiveness of the current administration's strategy in the Aegean. Critics and commentators have raised concerns about Greece's preparedness for potential conflict with Turkey, questioning the existence of a cohesive National Security Strategy and the functionality of the National Security Council.
