Greece rises in global economic freedom ranking
According to the 2026 Economic Freedom of the World Index, published by KEFIM in collaboration with the Canadian Fraser Institute, Greece has risen two positions in the global ranking, moving from 61st to 61st place among 165 countries and jurisdictions. The country's overall score improved from 7.01 to 7.17 out of 10.
Despite this global improvement, Greece's standing within the European Union has declined, dropping from 24th to 25th place among the 27 member states. Only Croatia and Poland rank lower than Greece within the EU.
The index evaluated five key areas based on 2024 data. Greece showed progress in four of these sectors: state size (improving from 4.89 to 5.24), international trade (8.65), currency stability (9.09), and the regulatory environment (6.64). However, a slight decline was noted in the legal system and property rights, where the score fell from 6.23 to 6.22.
