Greece seasonal tourism labor reveals debt and visa challenges
A seasonal worker from the Philippines, identified as K., faced significant financial and legal hardships while working in the Greek tourism sector on Rhodes. To afford the journey to Greece, K. incurred substantial debt through bank loans and relatives, with reports suggesting some Asian workers pay intermediaries between 3,000 and 10,000 euros to secure placement.
Despite an expected monthly salary of 1,000 euros, K. spent the first five months of work solely repaying these debts. The situation was further complicated by visa restrictions; the seasonal permit was valid for only nine months, requiring a three-month departure from the country before being eligible to return to work.
