Greece seeks role in IMEC through maritime talks in India
Greek Deputy Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy, Stefanos Gikas, held high-level meetings in New Delhi during the ‘Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue 2026’ to strengthen bilateral ties with India.
A primary focus of the discussions was Greece’s potential role in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). Gikas emphasized that Greek ports could serve as vital gateways for Indian goods entering the European market, leveraging the country’s strategic geographic position and the significant global presence of the Greek-owned merchant fleet.
During meetings with Indian Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur, the two sides discussed enhancing maritime and commercial ties, as well as the possibility of Indian investments in Greek port infrastructure. Additionally, Gikas met with Indian Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, where both nations reaffirmed their commitment to developing a strategic partnership in the defense sector.
