Greece sees 38.5% drop in gold sovereign liquidations

Data from the Bank of Greece indicates a significant decrease in the liquidation of gold sovereigns by Greek citizens. In the first half of the year, only 13,950 gold sovereigns were liquidated, compared to 22,697 during the same period in 2025, representing a decline of approximately 38.5%.

This trend is attributed to high market volatility and international geopolitical uncertainty, which have prompted holders to retain gold as a “safe haven” rather than selling for profit. Many individuals view these assets as essential security against economic instability rather than mere tradable commodities.

In a broader market context, UBS analysts suggest gold prices could potentially reach $5,000 per ounce. Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi, head of investments at UBS, noted that the gold rally has strong support, aided by recent actions in the United States and Japan to strengthen the yen, which mitigated fears of mass US bond sales.
