Greece sees heavy rain, thunderstorms and record lightning activity

Heavy rain and thunderstorms swept across mainland Greece on Tuesday, with the greatest rainfall measured at 63 mm in Narthaki, Larissa. Other locations recorded up to 61 mm in Neos Palamas, 51.6 mm in Farsala and 46.8 mm in Polygyrus. The Met Office reported more than 30,000 lightning discharges over the country during the event.

Meteorologists said the conditions are typical for May‑June, noting intense instability and strong convective activity. They expect rain to continue on Saturday, followed by a rise in temperatures from Sunday onward, returning to normal levels for the season.

The storms brought strong winds, localized hail and occasional tornado‑like gusts in northern and eastern regions, while southern areas experienced lighter showers.
