Greece sees record surge in pension applications

Greece is experiencing a historic wave of retirements, with pension applications reaching record levels. Data from the ATLAS report indicates that 164,434 applications were submitted between January and September, the highest figure for a nine-month period since the establishment of EFKA.

Experts predict that over 800,000 insured individuals will enter retirement between 2023 and 2027. This trend is expected to continue until 2030 as the baby boomer generation—the largest demographic cohort born between 1960 and 1965—exits the labor market. Currently, women account for 7 out of every 10 pension applications.

For those deciding between retiring in late 2026 or during 2027, financial considerations include total lifetime income, potential salary loss, and the impact of annual pension increases. While a full national pension in 2026 is estimated at 446.87 euros based on a 500 euro average income, the final amount depends on specific insurance years and legislative parameters.
