Greece sees record tourism numbers amid growing labor shortage
In the first four months of 2026 Greece welcomed more than 5.2 million tourists, breaking previous records. Travel receipts rose 9.5% in April year‑on‑year to €1.115 billion, and the travel balance posted a surplus of €735.9 million, up from €697.3 million in the same month of 2025. Over the January‑April period, travel receipts increased 36.9% to €2.791 billion, driven by a 27.1% rise in inbound arrivals and higher average spend per trip.
Despite the boom, the sector faces a severe workforce shortage. Hotel, catering and tourism businesses reported more than 85,000 vacant positions at the start of the 2026 season, highlighting a structural gap between rapid sector growth and the supply of qualified staff. Industry leaders warn that without addressing training, working conditions and career prospects, the sustainability of Greece’s tourism success could be jeopardised.
