Greece sees tourism surge driven by celebrity visits and Hollywood influence

Greece is experiencing a significant surge in tourism, particularly from the United States, driven by high-profile celebrity visits and Hollywood influence. Major stars including Madonna, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, and Nicole Kidman have documented their travels across various Greek islands and regions such as Corfu, Mykonos, and the Peloponnese on social media, providing massive free publicity for the nation.

This celebrity-driven trend, often referred to as ‘set-jetting’ or the ‘Odyssey effect,’ is boosting the lucrative American market. In 2025, approximately 1.55 million Americans visited Greece, contributing significantly to an industry that accounts for nearly 30 percent of the country's GDP. In response to increased demand, airlines like American Airlines have expanded capacity, with 103 weekly direct flights now connecting the US to Athens.

However, the influx has sparked domestic debate. While Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has welcomed the economic benefits, some political figures have raised concerns regarding local privacy and the environmental impact of rapid tourism growth. For instance, a dispute arose in Corfu regarding reports that residents were asked to close their windows to protect a celebrity's privacy during a stay.
