Greece: Special Court members selected for Tempi trial

The Greek Parliament has conducted a lottery to select the members of a Special Court to oversee the trial of former Deputy Minister Christos Triantopoulos. The proceedings concern the handling of the scene following the February 2023 Tempi railway collision, specifically allegations regarding the alteration of the site, often referred to as the “bazoma” case.

The court will consist of 13 regular members and 6 substitute members, drawn from the Supreme Court (Areopagus) and the Council of State. Georgios Papageorgiou, a Supreme Court judge, is set to preside over the court, while Anna Kalouta will serve as the prosecutor.

In addition to Triantopoulos, four other individuals holding official positions at the time of the accident have been referred to the court as accomplices. These include the former Regional Governor of Thessaly, Kostas Agorastos, as well as the former General Secretary of Civil Protection, Vasilis Papageorgiou, the head of the Hellenic Police at the scene, Agapios Charakopoulos, and the head of the Fire Service, Evangelos Falaras.

The trial is expected to commence within 40 to 60 days after the President of the Special Court receives the official parliamentary minutes.
