Greece student housing rents surge after university admissions results
Following the release of university admission rankings, demand for student accommodation across Greece spiked. Average rent offers rose 5.3% nationwide in the second quarter of 2026, with some cities seeing annual increases up to 7.3%.
In Athens, typical monthly rents now hover around €550, while Thessaloniki averages €500 and Patras about €400. Prices per square metre range from €13.3 in central Athens to €11–12 in other major student towns. The market squeeze is compounded by a low supply of public student dormitories, covering only about 4.6% of the roughly 200 000 students studying away from home.
The government has also raised the student housing allowance for the 2025‑2026 academic year: a base grant of €1 500, €2 000 for students outside Attica and Thessaloniki, and up to €2 500 for shared‑housing arrangements. Applications are accepted online until 31 July 2026.
