Greece targets 6.8 GW of battery storage by 2030

The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy plans to expand battery storage capacity from the current 630 MW to 1 GW by the end of the year, 1.5 GW by mid‑2027 and 3 GW by 2028, reaching a total of 6.8 GW by 2030. An Aurora Energy report forecasts that by year‑end the installed battery capacity will be 900 MW (711 MW of two‑hour and 189 MW of four‑hour units). Additional capacity will come from 333 MW under the “Storage Systems in Enterprises” programme, 4.7 GW of batteries that will operate directly in the market without support schemes (0.9 GW in the distribution network and 3.8 GW in the transmission system), and 900 MW generated by converting licences of closed fossil‑fuel plants under law 5151/2024.

The batteries store surplus renewable energy when wholesale prices are low or negative and release it during peak demand, thereby displacing more expensive gas‑fired generation and helping to stabilise electricity prices. Deputy Energy Minister Nikos Tsafos noted that battery‑costs have fallen 93 % since 2010 – from $1,474 /kWh to an expected $108 /kWh in 2025 – and warned, “If we had subsidised batteries too early, we would have overpaid them, like early solar.”
