Greece targets semiconductor innovation and 100 billion euro investment era
Greece is positioning itself for significant technological and economic growth through advancements in microelectronics and substantial new investment frameworks.
In the technology sector, researchers at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IETL) are highlighting the potential of gallium nitride (GaN). This wide bandgap semiconductor material is critical for next-generation telecommunications, radar systems, space technology, and dual-use defense applications. Dr. Emmanouil Trichas notes that Greece possesses a unique advantage in this field due to its combination of raw mineral resources, advanced research expertise, and a domestic design ecosystem.
On the economic front, a new period of investment opportunities is emerging following the conclusion of the Recovery and Resilience Facility. According to Anodos Consulting, available national and European resources are estimated to exceed 100 billion euros between 2027 and 2034. Key funding streams include the National Development Program, the remainder of the ESPA 2021-2027 program, and the 2028-2034 programming period. These funds are expected to target digital and green transitions, industrial modernization, renewable energy, and infrastructure development.
