Greece: The 1952 Trial of the Air Force Officers

On August 22, 1952, the Trial of the Air Force Officers began in Greece, marking a significant episode of political repression during the post-Civil War era. What began as a minor aircraft accident in September 1951 was transformed by intelligence services into a fabricated conspiracy involving sabotage and communist espionage.

A total of 33 officers and non-commissioned officers were brought to trial on charges of participating in a communist conspiracy. The proceedings were characterized as a parody of justice, utilizing manufactured evidence and coerced testimonies to instill fear within the military and society. The court handed down severe sentences, including death penalties for three officers, life imprisonment for 14 others, and lengthy prison terms for the remainder. Three officers were executed in November 1952.

The case was later revealed to be entirely fabricated. In 1986, the Hellenic Parliament passed a unanimous decision recognizing the conspiracy and morally rehabilitating those who had been persecuted.
