Greece Tightens Penalties for Illegal Disabled Parking
Greece's new Road Traffic Code introduces harsher sanctions for drivers who park in spaces reserved for people with disabilities. The penalties include a €150 fine, a 60‑day suspension of the driver’s licence and a 70‑day suspension of the vehicle’s registration.
The measure follows a widely shared incident in Thessaloniki where a driver left a Tesla Model Y in a disabled parking spot on Platia Ippodromiou. The photo sparked public criticism and prompted authorities to emphasise the need to protect accessibility for people with reduced mobility.
Officials say the stricter rules aim to deter “anti‑social” behaviour and ensure that disabled parking spaces remain available for those who truly need them.
