Greece to acquire two Italian Bergamini-class frigates

Greece is set to acquire two Italian FREMM-class Bergamini frigates from the Italian Navy. The Implementing Arrangement for the deal is scheduled to be signed in Rome on September 8, 2026, in the presence of the Greek and Italian Defense Ministers.

The agreement involves the transfer of the Carlo Bergamini (general purpose configuration) and the Virginio Fasan (anti-submarine configuration). The first vessel is expected to be delivered to Greece in the first half of 2028, followed by the second in the first half of 2029.

Estimates for the total cost of the two frigates and a five-year support package range between 460 million and 700 million euros. The deal follows a previous Memorandum of Understanding signed in La Spezia in September 2025 and may include a “2+2” formula, potentially allowing for the acquisition of two additional units in the future.
