Greece targets 20 billion euros for new agricultural policy
During the fourth session of the National Dialogue for the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2028-2034 in Thessaloniki, Greek officials outlined a strategic shift for the nation's agricultural sector.
Vice President Kostis Hardjidakis stated that Greece can mobilize over 20 billion euros for agriculture and rural areas during the upcoming period. He emphasized a move away from the old subsidy model toward a system focused on reliability and transparency. This includes the integration of OPEKEPE into the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) and the implementation of the MyAGRO digital platform to improve cross-checks and data interoperability.
Minister of Rural Development and Food Margaritis Schoinas highlighted that the 20 billion euros should be used to drive production, competitiveness, and added value rather than just income support. He identified water management as a critical national priority, noting that agriculture accounts for 80-85% of water consumption. The new policy aims to address climate change, food security, and European autonomy through investments in irrigation infrastructure and innovation.
