Greece bids to host 2028 European Men's Water Polo Championship
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced that Greece will officially bid to host the 2028 European Men's Water Polo Championship. This decision follows a request from the Hellenic Swimming Federation and aims to utilize the country's upgraded Olympic aquatic facilities.
The announcement comes alongside celebrations for recent successes in aquatic sports. Swimmer Apostolos Christou secured a gold medal in the 100m backstroke at the European Championships, while Apostolos Siskos earned silver in the 200m backstroke and bronze in the 200m butterfly.
Additionally, Maria Prevolaraki was named as a flag bearer for the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, alongside Apostolos Siskos. Mitsotakis noted that these achievements, following the national water polo team's recent World Cup victory, highlight the strength of Greek aquatic sports on the international stage.
