Greece to cut hybrid car tax breaks starting Jan 2027

From 1 January 2027 Greece will overhaul the classification fee for hybrid vehicles. The current tiered system – 75 % exemption for hybrids emitting up to 50 g CO₂/km and 50 % for higher emitters – will be abolished. All hybrid electric cars, regardless of emissions, will receive a uniform 50 % exemption from the fee, limiting the tax advantage previously enjoyed by the cleanest models.

A transitional provision preserves the 75 % exemption for hybrids emitting 51‑75 g CO₂/km that were imported between 1 November 2025 and 31 May 2026. These vehicles will be recorded with two new customs codes, V38 (75 % exemption with VAT) and V39 (75 % exemption without VAT). The change is expected to affect final prices of many models, giving buyers a window until the end of 2026 to benefit from the current, more favourable regime. The directive was clarified by AAD director Georgios Pitsilis in an official circular.
