Greece to expand Onasi Public Schools model to all middle schools

Greek Minister of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports Sofia Zacharaki announced plans to expand the Onasi Public Schools model to all middle schools starting in 2027. The announcement followed ceremonies for the 9th Gymnasium and 11th General Lyceum of Heraklion, which have begun operating as Onasi Public Schools.

With the addition of these two units in Heraklion, the number of Onasi Public Schools nationwide has increased from 12 to 20. These schools aim to provide free access to modern public education featuring innovative curricula and creative extracurricular clubs. The expansion is supported by the Onasi Foundation, with President Antonis Papadimitriou emphasizing the goal of providing modern, community-based education to as many children as possible.

In addition to the Onasi schools, Minister Zacharaki visited several other educational facilities in Heraklion, including schools renovated under the ‘Marietta Giannakou’ program. This program has integrated 47 school units in Crete over the last two years. The visits included representatives from major Greek banks and local government officials.
