Greece to provide 400 euro allowance to 2.2 million pensioners

Approximately 2.2 million pensioners in Greece are set to receive a 400 euro allowance, which is expected to be paid by the end of November. This payment is tax-free and cannot be seized.

Significant changes have been made to the eligibility criteria. The previous income and asset thresholds—which limited payments to individuals earning up to 25,000 euros and couples earning up to 35,000 euros—have been abolished. This means the allowance will now be distributed regardless of an individual's income or wealth status.

Eligibility is now determined by age-based criteria: a 65-year age limit for those receiving old-age or double pensions, and a 60-year age limit for those receiving only a widow's/widower's pension. The age requirement must have been met by December of the previous year. Additionally, new beneficiaries receiving their final pension in September 2026 will also be eligible.
