Greece to hold commemorations for Asia Minor Catastrophe anniversary

Various commemorations are scheduled across Greece to honor the 104th anniversary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the displacement of Greeks from Asia Minor.

In Kalamata, the Association of Asia Minor Greeks will hold a symbolic ceremony on September 14, 2026, at the city's pier. The event features the release of illuminated paper boats into the Messenian Gulf, each inscribed with the names of ancestors lost during the displacement, accompanied by prayer and candlelight.

In Komotini, the official National Day of Remembrance will be observed on September 20, 2026. The program includes the decoration of public buildings, a solemn ceremony at the Hero Square with military honors, and a memorial service at the Holy Cathedral of the Evangelismos of the Theotokos, led by the Metropolitan of Maroneia and Komotini.
