Greece to hold commemorations for Asia Minor Greek Genocide
Commemorative events are scheduled for September 20 to mark the National Memory Day for the Genocide of the Greeks of Asia Minor. These observances aim to honor those who lost their lives and those forced to leave their ancestral homes.
In Rethymno, the Regional Unit is organizing events to highlight the significant impact refugees from Asia Minor had on the city’s social and cultural identity. Maria Lioni, Vice Governor of Rethymno, noted that the refugees brought a wealth of culture, traditions, and values that became an integral part of the local community.
In the Central Macedonia region, ceremonies will include memorial services, speeches, and the laying of wreaths at the Monument of Refugee Hellenism in Neapoli. The program involves various officials, including representatives of the government, the Hellenic Parliament, and local municipal leaders, alongside refugee associations.
