Greece to hold pilot trial on retirees' solidarity contribution

A pilot trial will be held on 7 October 2026 before the Court of Auditors (Ελεγκτικό Συνέδριο) to decide how Greece’s solidarity contribution for retirees (EAS) is calculated. The case, filed by the court’s president Nikos Aggelaras, asks that the contribution be applied only to the portion of a pension that exceeds €1,400, instead of the current system that levies the full amount.

If the court rules in favour of the lawsuit, the government is expected to explore scenarios for reforming the scheme in 2027, which could affect roughly 440,000 pensioners who currently pay about €10 billion in contributions since the 2010 memo‑law. The current method imposes a 6 % levy on the entire pension for those earning over €1,468, while the proposed proportional model would limit the levy to the excess above €1,400, reducing the burden for many retirees and possibly triggering retroactive payments. The outcome could reshape the fiscal treatment of public‑sector retirees and influence future pension policy.
