Greece to implement automatic tax returns for all taxpayers by 2029

The Greek Ministry of National Economy and Finance and the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) are planning a gradual expansion of the automatic income tax return system. While the measure has previously been applied to employees and retirees with limited additional income, the new plan aims to extend full pre-filling of tax declarations to all categories of taxpayers.

Starting in 2026, the initiative will begin expanding to include self-employed individuals, farmers, and other income earners. The ultimate goal is to have all tax declarations fully pre-filled and capable of being submitted automatically by the AADE without taxpayer intervention by 2029 at the latest. This process will involve the pre-filling of all income fields in electronic forms E1, E2, and E3, which will also limit the ability of taxpayers to make manual interventions. For those who do not access the electronic application, the AADE will automatically submit the pre-filled declarations and handle the settlement, sending the results directly to the taxpayer.
