Greece to implement electronic bracelets for domestic violence suspects

Greek Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis has announced the introduction of electronic bracelets for suspects accused of domestic violence who are subject to restrictive conditions. The measure aims to monitor whether perpetrators approach their victims in violation of prosecutorial orders. Chrysochoidis noted that if a suspect violates these terms, they will be considered a recidivist and face imprisonment.

The announcement follows significant reforms within the Hellenic Police prompted by the Kyriaki Griva case in April 2024. Chrysochoidis highlighted that the police now operate under stricter protocols, including the establishment of 63 domestic violence offices across Greece, the creation of safe houses for victims, and tougher legislation.

Additionally, the Minister addressed other public safety issues, including road safety and crime prevention. He reported a decrease in road fatalities, noting that alcohol testing increased from approximately 1 million in the first eight months of 2025 to over 2 million in 2026. He also addressed the rise in electric scooter violations, noting 11,000 recorded offenses, and mentioned efforts to combat electricity theft and small-scale thefts.
