Greece to implement Free Flow toll system on Crete highway

Greece is planning to implement a ‘Free Flow’ toll system to reduce traffic congestion and eliminate the need for drivers to stop at traditional toll stations. The Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) is expected to be the first major road project in the country to fully adopt this technology.

Under the new system, digital gates equipped with high-resolution cameras, laser sensors, and e-pass readers will be installed above the roadway. These devices will identify license plates and vehicle characteristics, allowing traffic to maintain normal speeds without barriers. Instead of fixed fees per station, charging will be based on the actual distance traveled within the charging zone.

Payments will be handled digitally. Drivers with an e-pass will be charged automatically via an electronic wallet. Those without an e-pass must pay through a dedicated platform or application within a specific timeframe; failure to do so will result in an automatic fine. Hellastron is expected to play a central role as the unified highway operator and collector, while the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) may handle the collection of fines.
