Greece implements energy support measures amid rising fuel costs

Greece is facing significant economic pressure due to rising energy costs. Fuel prices have reached new highs, with diesel exceeding €2.21 per liter and unleaded gasoline approaching €2.20 per liter, levels not seen since the start of the conflict in the Middle East. This surge is impacting both households and businesses, with reports indicating that Greek drivers must spend a larger portion of their income on fuel compared to many European counterparts.

In response, the Greek government is preparing a package of support measures. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has signaled interventions to lower heating oil prices, aiming for levels below €1.75. The government is also considering subsidies at the pump for both households and businesses to mitigate the impact of the special consumption tax.

Opposition leader Alexis Tsipras and the SYRIZA party have criticized the government's approach, proposing more aggressive measures such as capping heating oil at €1.40 and diesel at €1.80. They have also submitted an amendment to reduce the special consumption tax to the lowest level permitted by EU law. The Ministry of National Economy and Finance has countered these proposals, arguing that certain measures, such as a significant VAT reduction, face legal restrictions under EU directives or would cause unsustainable fiscal losses.
