Greece to implement new notary procedure for wills in 2026

The Greek Minister of Justice, Giorgos Floridis, has issued a decision establishing a new framework for the certification and selection of notaries responsible for declaring published holographic wills. This new procedure, which refines provisions of Article 808A of the Code of Civil Procedure, is set to take effect on September 16, 2026.

Under the new regulations, each Notary Association will be responsible for maintaining a specialized list of notaries authorized to handle these declarations. All notaries who are members of their respective Association may apply to be included in these lists via the digital platform of the Wills Registry.

During the initial implementation phase, lists are expected to be posted on the digital platform on September 15, 2026, and will remain valid until December 31, 2027. New notaries can be added to the lists until December 31, 2026. From January 1, 2028, onwards, the lists will be finalized on the last working day of each year. Individuals seeking to declare a published holographic will will submit a request through the digital Wills Registry platform and select a notary from the alphabetical list.
