Greece implements price cuts on 1,660 supermarket products
Greece is implementing a National Social Agreement to reduce the cost of living, starting Monday, August 31. Under this initiative, prices for approximately 1,660 product codes in supermarkets will decrease by 5% to 30%. The reductions target essential goods, including meat, dairy, pasta, baby food, detergents, and school supplies. Participating products will feature special shelf markings to assist consumers.
Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos noted that the initiative involves around 90 suppliers and 12 supermarket chains. Branded products see an average reduction of about 7%, while school supplies and private-label goods also feature significant discounts. The program aims to provide relief to households, particularly with the upcoming school year.
In addition to supermarket price cuts, the Greek government is expected to announce an extension of the 10-cent per liter diesel subsidy. The duration of this fuel subsidy remains uncertain, as officials stated that the decision depends on international energy market developments and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
