Moldova economic update: trade growth and inflation challenges

Moldova is experiencing diverse economic shifts. Foreign trade saw growth from January to July 2026, with exports rising 11.7% to 1.97 billion euros and imports increasing 7.1%. The European Union remains the primary partner, accounting for 65.3% of total exports.

In the agricultural sector, sunflower exports for July–August 2026 dropped by 64% compared to the previous year, though average export prices reached a six-year high. Conversely, plum harvests are expected to rise by 20%, with nearly half destined for the EU market.

On the domestic front, inflation has reached 7%, driven largely by rising costs for food and utilities, prompting citizens to increase savings. To mitigate rising costs, the government announced that applications for energy compensation for the 2026–2027 cold season will open on October 1. Minister Natalia Plugaru noted that eligibility checks will be more rigorous, including verification of household income, bank accounts, and residency status to ensure support reaches those most in need.
