Greece to install 843 smart pedestrian crossings near schools

The Greek Ministry of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence is implementing a €78 million project to install 843 smart pedestrian crossings outside schools across 107 municipalities. Scheduled for completion by late October 2026, the initiative aims to enhance student safety during daily commutes, particularly in low-light or adverse weather conditions.

The smart system utilizes advanced technology to increase visibility. When sensors detect a pedestrian, embedded LED devices illuminate the crossing and the waiting area on the sidewalk. Simultaneously, vertical LED signs alert drivers to the presence of pedestrians. The system is designed to operate autonomously using solar power.

Beyond safety, the crossings will feature sensors that collect real-time environmental and traffic data. This information will be integrated into a central platform to provide traffic insights for both central and municipal authorities. The project is being implemented by the Technical Chamber of Greece and is funded by the NextGenerationEU program under the ‘Greece 2.0’ National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
