Greece to invest €56.2 million in 1,000 school libraries

The Greek Ministry of Education is launching a project to establish and upgrade 1,000 school libraries across the country, supported by €56.2 million in funding from the ESPA 2021-2027 program.

The initiative aims to promote literacy and strengthen the reading culture among students. The project includes the creation of 25 school libraries for preschool education, 227 new libraries for primary and secondary education, and the upgrading of 400 existing libraries.

Key components of the plan involve the hiring of 400 librarians, the provision of reading collections to over 8,000 school units, and the digital integration of these libraries with the National Library of Greece and public libraries. Upgrades will also include the procurement of furniture, computers, and management software.
