Greece to invest €62.2 million in maritime traffic management system

Greece is expanding and modernizing its National Vessel Traffic Management and Information System (VTMIS) with a total public expenditure of €62,245,000. Funded through the ESPA ‘Transport 2021-2027’ program, the project is managed by the Hellenic Coast Guard’s Directorate of Maritime Safety.

The initiative involves upgrading seven existing maritime traffic control centers located in Piraeus, Rafina, Lavrio, Patras, Antirrio, Corfu, and Igoumenitsa. Additionally, three new control centers will be established in Thessaloniki, Elefsina, and Neapoli Volou.

Designed to comply with International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines and International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authority (IALA) recommendations, the upgraded system will provide real-time monitoring, control, and regulation of maritime traffic. The project aims to enhance navigation safety, improve Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, and support marine environmental protection.
