Greece announces social welfare updates for families and retirees

Greece is preparing several social welfare updates targeting families, retirees, and workers.

A supplementary payment of 150 euros per child is scheduled to be completed by August 31, 2026. This installment targets approximately 80,000 families who were not included in the initial cycle, specifically those with children born between January 1, 2025, and July 31, 2026. To receive the funds, parents must ensure the child is listed as a dependent in their 2025 tax returns and that a valid IBAN is registered with the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE).

Regarding long-term measures, the government is considering a package to be presented at the Thessaloniki International Fair. This includes a potential 30% increase in the A21 Child Allowance to support demographic growth, which could cost approximately 200 million euros annually.

For retirees, discussions are underway to increase the annual November extraordinary supplement from 300 euros to between 400 and 446 euros. Additionally, pension increases of approximately 2.7% to 2.8% are projected for 2027. Other proposed measures include reducing social security contributions for employees and employers to lower non-wage costs.
