Greece to launch 23rd rabies vaccination campaign for red foxes

The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food (ΥΠΑΑΤ) has announced the 23rd national rabies vaccination campaign targeting the country's red fox population. The initiative aims to immunize wild animals to control the virus and protect both animal and public health.

Scheduled to run from mid-October 2026 through mid-November 2026, the campaign will utilize aerial drops of oral vaccine baits. The operation will span 17 Regional Units, including areas such as Evros, Rodopi, Xanthi, Drama, Kavala, Serres, Kilkis, Thessaloniki, Pella, Imathia, Florina, Kastoria, Kozani, Grevena, Ioannina, Thesprotia, and Preveza.

This preventative measure follows Greece's official designation as a rabies-free country by the European Commission in 2021. The first aerial vaccination campaign in the country was conducted in 2013 following a rabies epidemic.
