Greece Ministry of Justice announces digital inheritance platform
The Greek Ministry of Justice has announced the creation of a Central Digital Inheritance Platform to modernize inheritance procedures. This initiative aims to provide transparency, reduce bureaucracy, and protect citizens from unforeseen debts by allowing heirs to view both assets and liabilities through a single application.
The platform will aggregate data from various institutions, including the tax administration, banking institutions, insurance funds, and land registries. Heirs will be able to access information regarding real estate, bank accounts, investment products, and corporate shares, as well as debts to the state, insurance funds, and financial institutions.
This reform follows the implementation of new inheritance laws which stipulate that an heir is only liable for a deceased person's debts up to the value of the inherited estate. The legal framework was developed by a working group led by Professor Georgios Lekkas of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The professional association POMIDA has expressed satisfaction with the initiative, noting its importance in preventing the accidental assumption of debts that characterized previous economic crises.
