Greece to modernize disaster aid and restore wildfire-damaged regions

Greece is set to overhaul its disaster relief system with the launch of a fully digital platform in September. The new legislation aims to replace 50-year-old bureaucratic procedures with an efficient mechanism that allows citizens to track aid applications, from document verification to final payment, in real time. The reform also expands eligibility for households facing property title disputes and focuses on long-term community reconstruction rather than simple financial payouts.

In response to recent wildfires that scorched approximately 113,000 stremmata, the Environment and Energy Ministry has unveiled a restoration plan for Western Attica. Anti-erosion and flood-protection works are scheduled to begin by September 15 and conclude by the end of the year. The burned areas will be subject to mandatory reforestation within 30 days.

Funding for recovery efforts includes €25 million from HELLENiQ ENERGY and €25 million in Green Fund financing for mountain flood protection in several municipalities. Additionally, Piraeus Bank will finance €1.5 million for restoration studies and projects.
