Greece to modernize justice system via digital tools and AI

Greek Justice Minister Georgios Floridis announced that the country's judicial system is undergoing a major digital transformation aimed at achieving world-class efficiency within two years. Speaking at an event during the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair, Floridis highlighted the implementation of a unique digital electronic judicial folder, a project he noted has not been implemented elsewhere in the world.

Key reforms include the unification of first-instance jurisdiction and the introduction of a new judicial map. At the Athens Court of First Instance, which handles approximately 60% of the nation's cases, the time required to set a trial date has reportedly dropped from four years to seven or eight months following 2024 changes. Additionally, the issuance of criminal records, which previously took one to two months, can now be completed in five minutes.

Future steps involve training judges, lawyers, and judicial staff on these new technologies. The Minister also noted the upcoming integration of Artificial Intelligence to transcribe court proceedings, with the goal of providing transcripts to legal professionals within two hours.
