Greece announces no extensions for long-term student deregistration

Greece's Ministry of Education has announced that no further extensions will be granted for the deregistration of long-term students, commonly referred to as ‘eternal’ students. The next phase of this process is set to conclude by December 31, 2026.

Deputy Minister Nikos Papaioannou stated that the measure aims to address students who have remained enrolled for decades without completing their studies. This upcoming phase targets students in five-year programs, such as polytechnic schools, who enrolled before 2016, as well as those who received extensions after completing 70% of their credit units but failed to graduate. Officials estimate that between 40,000 and 50,000 students in five-year programs may face deregistration.

In a separate development, the deadline for new students to complete their electronic enrollment in public universities expires today. Successful candidates from the Panhellenic Exams must use the official gov.gr platform to finalize their registration to avoid losing their academic year.
