Greece to provide double rent reimbursements for regional public employees

Approximately 50,000 teachers, doctors, and nurses serving in regional areas of Greece are set to receive double rent reimbursements this autumn. The new regulation provides for the return of two rents per year without income criteria for specific categories of employees serving ‘off-site’.

The assistance applies to those renting accommodation in the regions where they serve, excluding the Attica Region (with the exception of the Islands Regional Unit) and the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Unit.

The first payments, covering retroactive rents for 2024, are expected by the end of September. Recipients who previously received a single rent reimbursement in November 2025 will receive an additional amount equal to 1/12 of their total annual rent expense. Those who did not receive a reimbursement due to income criteria will receive a retroactive amount equal to 2/12 of their 2024 rents.

A second payment for 2025 rents is scheduled to be disbursed by the end of November 2026. Depending on previous eligibility, the total benefit may reach the equivalent of three or four monthly rents for the 2024-2025 period.
