Greece to provide rent reimbursement for regional educators and healthcare workers
Thousands of educators and healthcare professionals serving outside their permanent residences in Greece are set to receive a special rent reimbursement by September 25. This assistance, which covers up to two months of rent, is distinct from general income-based housing subsidies and is specifically designed for those working in regional areas outside the Attica Region and the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Unit.
The eligible groups include permanent and substitute teachers, special education staff, doctors, dentists, and various healthcare personnel such as nurses and ambulance crews. Unlike general subsidies, this measure does not apply income limits. The payments will cover retroactive rent paid in 2024, while 2025 rent reimbursements are scheduled for 2026.
Despite these measures, substitute teachers face significant logistical and financial hardships. Many report being forced to relocate on extremely short notice—sometimes within days of being assigned to a school. The high cost of living in remote areas often consumes a large portion of their salaries, creating severe economic and housing instability, particularly when sudden changes in school staffing occur during the academic year.
