Greece to provide rent reimbursements for 50,000 educators and healthcare workers

Approximately 50,000 educators and healthcare workers in Greece are set to receive rent reimbursements this autumn. The measure targets public sector employees, including permanent and substitute teachers, special education staff, doctors, dentists, nurses, and ambulance crews, who are required to rent housing away from their permanent residence.

The reimbursement will be distributed in two phases. The first phase, scheduled for completion by the end of September, will cover rent paid during 2024. The second phase, expected by the end of November, will cover rent paid in 2025. Depending on previous payments, some beneficiaries may receive a total equivalent to three or four monthly rents for the two-year period.

Under the new regulation, income criteria are not applied to these specific categories of workers. The assistance is available to those serving outside their permanent residence in regions of Greece, excluding the Attica region, the Islands Regional Unit, and the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Unit. The reimbursement can apply to a primary residence or a second rented home used for work purposes.
