Greece Ministry of Education announces 29,948 teacher recruitments
The Greek Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports has announced the first phase of substitute teacher recruitments for the 2026-27 school year. A total of 29,948 positions are being filled, including 23,162 teachers for primary and secondary education, 6,786 members of special educational and auxiliary personnel (EEP and EBP), and 142 teachers for Public Onanisi Schools.
In primary education, the recruitment includes 11,502 special education specialists and 4,121 general education teachers. Secondary education recruitment comprises 3,048 special education specialists, 4,109 general education teachers, 200 music specialists, and 142 teachers for Public Onanisi Schools. Additionally, 40 temporary substitutes have been allocated to the Sivitanidios School of Arts and Crafts.
Due to a lack of qualified candidates, 35 positions remained unfilled, specifically 34 roles in special education requiring certified proficiency in Braille or Greek Sign Language. Recruited staff are expected to report for duty between September 7 and September 8, 2026. While this first phase covers nearly 30,000 roles, officials noted that total educational needs may require up to 45,000 substitutes throughout the year to address ongoing structural vacancies.
