Greece to recruit 420 new coast guards to bolster maritime security

Vassilis Kikilias, the Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, has announced the recruitment of 420 new cadet coast guards to strengthen the Hellenic Coast Guard. The positions are divided into 126 general category roles, 210 for former Special Forces members, and 84 for Navy underwater demolition experts. The selection process will utilize a digital scoring system based on criteria such as high school grades, foreign language proficiency, university degrees, and driving or boat operator licenses. Candidates must also pass medical, athletic, and psychometric examinations.

Addressing maritime security, Kikilias noted a 60% reduction in migrant flows from Turkey. He emphasized the need for a closed structure in Heraklion and highlighted the ongoing efforts to combat human traffickers, whom he described as the 'enemy.' Referring to a recent shipwreck south of Gavdos where 51 people were rescued and one person was found dead, the Minister stated that rescue operations were conducted in international waters with assistance from commercial vessels, drones, and Frontex assets.
