Greece to reintroduce mandatory lawyers for major transactions

Under the new proposed Lawyers' Code in Greece, mandatory legal representation is being reintroduced for various legal transactions. This measure fulfills a long-standing demand from the legal community, following the removal of such requirements during the memorandum years to reduce transfer costs for citizens.

The requirement applies to transactions involving real, incorporeal, or property rights with a total value exceeding 50,000 euros. This includes real estate purchases, donations, and the transfer of assets. Specifically, lawyers must be present for the creation, transfer, alteration, or cancellation of rights, though the removal of mortgages and pre-notations is excluded.

Additionally, mandatory representation will extend to transactions involving ships and aircraft, as well as the drafting of inheritance contracts. The new regulations also include the drafting of contract templates as part of the lawyer's professional duties.
